Do you want to know where brains and talent come from? Chris Kurtz’s The Adventures of a South Pole Pig includes characters such as a pig, a cat, a dog, and a boy.
Flora, the pig, wishes to be free and work as a sled dog. She begins her adventures in the hold of a ship, competing for food with the rats and making friends with Sophia, the cat. There has been a shipwreck. Flora saves the ship’s captain. All of them end up in Antarctica. Oscar, the sledge dog, and Aleric, the cabin boy, along with Flora and Sophia, use their brains to find food and supplies in order to survive.
One of my favourite parts of the book is a chapter in which Flora and Sophia lose track of Aleric and Oscar in the snow and ice of Antarctica. Sophia’s paws begin to bleed in this chapter. It’s my favourite part because I had no idea what was going to happen. Flora convinces Sophia into letting her carry her on her back. Another interesting part of this book was the threat of Flora being eaten. The Captain, on the other hand, never allows it. This made me think the Captain was one of the best characters in the book. Finally, because of the animal characters, I enjoyed this book. I especially enjoy reading books about animals.
Finally, this book is recommended for children aged 8 and up. It inspires friendship, loyalty and gratitude. Even if you’re a pig, your dreams can come true!
