Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie is about a 13-year-old girl named Hattie Campbell. She is taking a covered wagon west to the strange and wild lands of Oregon. Hattie is documenting her adventures in a diary.
One part of her diary said,”I don’t like how these boys are waving their rifles around. One of the boys accidentally shot a nine-year-old in the neck.” Throughout their journey, many exciting and tragic events occur. Will Hattie and her family arrive in Oregon safely, or will something terrible happen? You’ll find out if you read the book.
I think this book is very interesting. It was serious, funny, sad, and happy all at the same time. I liked the book a lot because it’s a historical fiction diary from a girl who travelled west. My favourite part was when Hattie told Mrs. Anderson (a lady travelling west) that “it’s a good thing you named your baby after a steamboat because she sure sounds like one.”
Mrs. Kinker is my favourite character because she acts all sweet to make people like her, then steals their items when no one is looking. Hattie reminds me of my sister, Michelle, because she, too, is smart and funny.
I recommend this book because it is an exciting historical adventure. This is the book for you if you’re interested in the year 1847.
